Top 13 (of the Week)

Sure, you know what's cool. But do you know what's really fuckin' FAR OUT? That's where Advanced Demonology comes in. Every week, (K)en and (S)wilson trudge through the murky waters of the pop culture hellscape, dredging up sparkly morsels of wonder. These are the result of our latest foray into the world of the weird, our wildest, wiggest-out picks of the week. Call it our 13 Point Program.

13. Demo archives
Wanna look at the covers of hundreds of obscure/underground/cult metal and punk demos from the 80's? I guess the bad news is, there's no download links to actually LISTEN to the demos, which seems like a glaring oversight, but anybody with any kinda interest in this stuff is such an obessive weirdo (ahem) that merely staring at xeroxes of the actual cassettes is probably enough to stir up the waves of nostalgia. This is like porn for advanced demonologists. (K)

12. Steve Hillage - Arzachel
Rocking a little Steve Hillage of Gong fame this week. On rotation is the the 1969 Arzachel record. The name Arzachel is the Latinization of an Arab astronomer. It's also the name of a really young creator in the south central part of the visible moon. (S)

11. Empty Palace
What if 1979 never ended? What would it sound like now? It would sound like this, motherfucker.(K)

10. Iron Dogs - Cold Bitch
Those of you who aren't on the facebook role call of Fenriz's Band Of the Week should get on it so you can turn on to blisteringly bad ass metal bands like Iron Dogs.Posted yesterday, listened to all day today by yours truly. (S)

9. Pink Smoke - No Party
Why’s there no party? There’s no party because Pink Smoke were here a couple hours ago and they fuckin’ burned the place down to the ground. (K)

8. New Swears - Funny Isn't Real
So after listening to Iron Dogs all day I decided to click on the keyword "Ottawa" on bandcamp. I mean what's going on up there, right? Turns out, other than old school metal revival, some damn good Black Lips brand  60's garage punk. Which is a cool. These guys can really write juvenile delinquent type songs with massive catchy hooks AND they dress like bank robbers. Schools out for summer, school's out forever.(S)

7. My dad was in a band blog
Every dude of proper "dad age" was in a band. That's a fact. I'm not even a dad, but I'm dad age, and I was in a band (Screaming Gore Guts, with the guy from Anal Cunt. We were 16). That's the premise of this fun/funny blog: younger folks digging through their parents' photo albums and finding pics of their fathers rocking out in regrettable and/or amazing rock n' roll outfits. Swilson will be in the blog someday. Go daddies go! (K)

6. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Long Hair Music
If Advanced demonology took over the U.S. Government this might be our national anthem. This or Where Evil Grows by the Poppy Family. (S)

5. Zeus comics
One of the most elaborate pseudo-hoaxes I've ever seen, Zeus comics is a never-was pre-code comics publishing company specializing in horror and smut who were going gangbusters in the 40's and 50's but were shut down by the Man during the comcis code crackdown, and all remaining copies of their comics were destroyed. You can't even find any today, man. Don't even bother looking. Luckily, a graphic novel telling the whole tawdry tale will be out soon! (K)

4. Lee Hazelwood Live
You guys ever see any footage of Lee performing live? Me neither! (S)

3. Agressive Mutliator
This is how rock n' roll sounds from now on. Deal with it. (K)

2. The Voices of East Harlem
Dig this 20 member group from well…East Harlem. They worked with Curtis Mayfield and put out records on Elektra and somehow, I don't know how, drifted into obscurity. They are supremely bad ass. (S)

1. The Movies About Girls All Summer Move Marathon
Check out the Movies About Girls blog all summer longs for podcasts about and reviews of all your fave weirdo summer flicks from Ken, Swilson, and our whole gang of misfits and unemployables. Good times and no hassles all summer long. (K)

Top 13 (Of The Week)

Sure, you know what's cool. But do you know what's really fuckin' FAR OUT? That's where Advanced Demonology takes over. Every week, (K)en and (S)wilson trudge through the murky waters of the pop culture hellscape, dredging up sparkly morsels of wonder. These are the result of our latest foray into the world of the weird, our wildest, wiggest-out picks of the week. Call it our 13 Point Program.

13. Ukulele Ike
Picked up a collection of CliffUkulele IkeEdwards' tunes from the 20's yesterday, and holy fuck was this guy good. His stuff is midway between pleasant daydream and drug-buzzy nightmare, and all of it's great. I haven't read up on him yet, but I'm guessing he either had 16 wives and none of 'em knew about each other, or he killed a guy over a card game and spent the rest of his life on the run. The point is, GET INTO UKULELE IKE, PRONTO. (K)

12. Amityville II: The Possession
Burt Young is a meat head dad who moves his family into a demonically possessed  house. Every time the demon fucks the place up he blames his kids and beats them with a belt. The demon who is really fond of the oldest son, convinces him to kill his entire family. I'm not spoiling the plot cause this happens in the first 45 minutes. Than the movie spins off into the most unreal Exorcist rip off of all time. It's actually better than the first Amityville movie even though it's worse. Does that make sense? (S)

11. This Week in Doomsday Cults
Granted, “Academy for Future Health” is a terrible name for a cult, but from the sound of things, shit was getting heavy for ACFH. Basically it's a German group of UFO loons who are concerned with a “Galactic Super Electromagnetic Wave” (Awesome!) that may be wiping us out soon. Why they think they need guns to prepare is a mystery, though. How's a gun gonna help against a Galactic Super Electromagnetic Wave? Anyway, they were hiding out in the Dominican Republic, and then earlier this week they got into a gun battle with the local federales, and now their gooses are collectively cooked. Hopefully the jail cell will deflect the galactic wave? (K)

10. The Human Expression - Love At Psychedelic Velocity
More like Sex at Psychedelic Velocity. These punks will kidnap your daughter, dose her, ravage her teenage body and leave her dazed and confused out on the boulevard for the Manson family to pick her up. "Cause you're sick and it's wrong and baby it won't be long till they're reading your will"  What's with garage rock?  Every song is about how their girlfriend burned them, but also they are on acid, and speed. So it's  blind fucked up sexually frustrated stoner rage. You already love these Eddie Haskell creeps, from Nuggets, ya know, "Optical Sound", the ultimate hangover tune.  They turned down a chance to record "Born to be Wild" and faded. (S)

09. The Water Witch
Gloomy Brits laying down unsettling doomscapes of forest-dwelling black-prog. I'm super into it. Makes me wanna hunt monsters with a bow and arrow. (K)

08. The Frost - Rock 'n Roll Music

Pull tab beer cans, cheap hot dogs on the grill, bad acid, girls doing the loco motion on the hood of a 1964 Chrysler but it's 1970. Sub-Grand Funk nonsense from Michigan. It's good for the afternoon BBQ but not much else. (S)

7. Beware Mr. Baker
Upcoming documentary on Cream's flame-bearded madman drummer. Where's he been all these years? What's he up to? From the looks of things, he's mostly up to beating up documentary filmmakers. This doc looks awesome and terrifying in equal doses. Can't wait! (K)

06. Mainliner - Imaginative Plan
Buzzsaw guitar. You ever hear that before? Roy Orbison looking Jap-rock motherfuckers wielding chainsaws, I mean buzz saws. What is a buzz saw anyway? Mainliner was the offshoot of High Rise who really wanted to call themselves Psychedelic Speed Freaks, although most likely they were a straight edge band, because it's really a drag to do drugs in Japan from what I hear. They lock you up and throw away the key. Buzz rhymes with fuzz and fuzz is a primary color, so if you take a red crayola and draw a line through time from Blue Cheer in San Francisco you end up in Tokyo with Mainliner. (S)

 5. Ride Into the Sun
I can't actually figure out how to buy this killer new 7” single from sun-baked Australian psychers, but you can definitely download it for free on Bandcamp, and I heartily recommend you do so. Groovy and laidback, but with a Jesus and Mary Chain-esque bite and a cinematic atmosphere. Sweet. (K)

04. Zakary Thaks - From The Habit
Child molestation "Can you Hear your Daddy's footsteps",  the meaning of life itself "Mirror Of Yesterday",  and "Green Crystal Ties", well I'm guessing that's about drugs. right? All from Corpus Christi texas, a righteous place to be a hippie. (S)

03. Hexvessel
Like Water Witch, Hexvessel previously toiled in black metal, and the deep, dark woods vibe is still there, but this is actually really groovy dark-folk with jazzy horns and almost chant-y vocals. Elegantly spooky stuff. (K)

02. George Harrison: Living In the Material World
I don't care what Ken says, the Beatles are fuckin' cool (actually we have never talked about the Fab Four, ever, maybe he's their number one fan). Although they were the biggest band in the land they certainly shaped the axis for which the Advanced Demonological world revolves. The film is more of a tribute to everything good about the most psychedelic Beatle. Nothing bad. But that's OK. That's just what my man deserves. (S)

1. The Dolly Parton Pinball Machine
Way cooler than the Nuge game because boobs.

13. Virgin Witch on Blu-ray!
Virgin Witch (1971) is a must-see for all budding demonologists. Here's the set-up: two groovy chicks - models, of course - show up at some notorious lesbian's gothic castle in the middle of nowhere (which, in 70's Britain, could seriously be nowhere) to land a modeling contract. They figure, what the hell, if they've gotta make out with the ol' broad, what's the harm? But when they get there, they find out there's way crazier shit than girl-on-girl antics going on - witchcraft is afoot! Will they be forced to join the evil Sapphic coven? Probably! Great stuff and now it's mastered in HD! (K)

12. The Police Tapes
Ride around with the cops in the South Bronx in 1976. This documentary was shot on one of the first video cameras available by the  people that brought you An American Family. It was the inspiration to the show Cops and Hill Street Blues. The Bronx in the seventies were some of the meanest of all mean streets in history. It's completely mesmerizing. (S)

11. Shuffler.Fm
So say you're like me (aging), and you find it difficult to get a hold on what "the kids" are listening to these days. You show up at the record shop on new-release day and you're mystified: who are these people and what do they do? Is Poor Moon techno or folk? Honestly, what the hell, Poor Moon? You know in the 80's, you knew what you were dealing with. Nobody thought Slayer might have been synthpop. Anyway, Shuffler.FM to the rescue. This swell Ipad app (you can also use it on the web) collects all the latest tunes from hundreds of music blogs and divides 'em up by genre. In the mood for Psychedelic (yes)? Post-rock (no)? Whatever floats your boat, you press the button and it takes you to the latest jams available in your chosen genre, and there's a handy music-player at the bottom that converts whatever format the original song was posted in, so you don't have to worry about what buttons to push. Super helpful, and a great way to discover great new tunes. (K)

10. Rasputin Stash
With one of the best band names in funk history and a record called The Devil Made Me Do It, this Chicago funk outfit was destined for advanced demonological heights. I'm pretty sure this was what the character J.J. Walker was getting down to off screen in Good Times.  Each song is like a still life from the inner city seventies: Mr. Cool, Hit it and and pass it,  I can feel your jones, you've opened my mind and the devil made me do it. yeah. For sure. (S)

Jean Rollin was one of the all-time great weirdo film auteurs. Back in the 70's, he made an amazing series of "erotic" vampire films, dreamy, hypnotic, low-budget gems like Lips of Blood and Fascination that were made with barely any money (and, for the most part, barely any script either) but delivered big on woozy atmosphere, abundant French-hippie-death-goddess nudity, and haunting tunes. Several of his films were recently released on Blu-ray, but The B-Music of Jean Rollin 1968-1979 is the first (far as I know) compilation of music from his soundtracks. And it's as trippy as you think it is. (K)

8Apres Ski Soundtrack
The soundtrack to some French Canadian ski movie that involves naked chicks. Although I'm dam near obsessed with female nudity, I'm really not interested in skiing, so I haven't tracked down the movie. The soundtrack is great, though.  French language easy funk, barroom sing a longs,  mindless mood music and slow Gainsborge-esque sex dirges, interspersed with clips from the film  that I don't understand, but the add to the atmosphere.  I haven't actually paid for the thing I've been playing it off of band camp while I cook. (S)

7. 10 Billion Earths?!
Seems like just last year, astronomers were guessing there was about 30 or so possible Earth-like planets in our galaxy. Now, according to an article in Wired this week, that number has gone up. Way up. There might be 10 BILLION PLANETS in the galaxy. We are definitely not alone. I hope for Swilson's sake the rest of the galaxy digs Loner Rock. (K)

6Tabloid
Errol Morris brings us the story of  former miss Wyoming, Joyce McKinney. In 1977 she decided to kidnap her ex-boyfriend, a devout Mormon, and deprogram him by chaining him up and having nonstop sex with him for three days. Great idea, huh?  It became a Tabloid sensation in Uk and the story becomes, somehow, linked to cloning!?!?! It needs to bee seen to be believed. Or maybe not believed. (S)

5. Orion's Beethoven was a space rock band from Argentina who released a couple of kooky records in the late 60's that straddled symphonic-prog, acid-battered, space-y, proto-metal thud, and free jazz freakouts. Their Superangel album (1973) was probably their high-water mark, but this killer black n' white film clip from some festival in Buenos Aires is a stone-groove too. The fellas clearly have very little control over their instruments, but they look awesome trying to wrangle their wayward sound. (K)

4. A Real Cool Time Revisited: Swedish Punk, Pop and Garage Rock 1982-1989
In case you don't know, Rock is not dead. It just retired and moved to Scandinavia. The 80's was such a great time to experience the mid-sixities. The Swedes on this bone crushing comp of stomp rock '65 revival have a way with it. Maybe it was all the raping and pillaging from the long ship glory days?  (S)

3. Teen A Go Go
Great documentary on the mid 60's Fort Worth Texas garage rock scene. Nobody ever got famous - Larry and the Blue Notes are pretty much the headliners in that pack of outsiders and never-weres, but the stories are great, the footage is fun and obviously rare (most of it is super 8!) and the sense of enthusiasm from those long-gone days is infectious. Teen out and turn on! (K)

2. The planet Saturn makes the best space rock!
Saturn emits some pretty intense radio waves and the Cassini spacecraft picks em up. Check  it out! It's better than most space bands here on earth. I predict this planet will be the biggest name in show biz by the year 2112. Mark my words... (S)

1. The Pierces - new album You and I
Last episode of the Advanced Demonology podcast, I mentioned how nobody actually sounds like Fleetwood Mac except Fleetwood Mac. Well, I take it back. This record sounds like fuckin' Fleetwood Mac. Late 70's cocaine and mayhem era. Plus, they're two hot sisters. And one of 'em is half of the awesome James Levy and Blood Red Rose (hint: she's not James Levy). I dig it! (K)
