Top 13 (Of The Week)
Sure, you know what's cool. But do you know what's really fuckin' FAR OUT? That's where Advanced Demonology takes over. Every week, (K)en and (S)wilson trudge through the murky waters of the pop culture hellscape, dredging up sparkly morsels of wonder. These are the result of our latest foray into the world of the weird, our wildest, wiggest-out picks of the week. Call it our 13 Point Program.
13. Ukulele Ike
Picked up a collection of Cliff “Ukulele Ike” Edwards' tunes from the 20's yesterday, and holy fuck was this guy good. His stuff is midway between pleasant daydream and drug-buzzy nightmare, and all of it's great. I haven't read up on him yet, but I'm guessing he either had 16 wives and none of 'em knew about each other, or he killed a guy over a card game and spent the rest of his life on the run. The point is, GET INTO UKULELE IKE, PRONTO. (K)
12. Amityville II: The Possession
Burt Young is a meat head dad who moves his family into a demonically possessed house. Every time the demon fucks the place up he blames his kids and beats them with a belt. The demon who is really fond of the oldest son, convinces him to kill his entire family. I'm not spoiling the plot cause this happens in the first 45 minutes. Than the movie spins off into the most unreal Exorcist rip off of all time. It's actually better than the first Amityville movie even though it's worse. Does that make sense? (S)
11. This Week in Doomsday Cults
Granted, “Academy for Future Health” is a terrible name for a cult, but from the sound of things, shit was getting heavy for ACFH. Basically it's a German group of UFO loons who are concerned with a “Galactic Super Electromagnetic Wave” (Awesome!) that may be wiping us out soon. Why they think they need guns to prepare is a mystery, though. How's a gun gonna help against a Galactic Super Electromagnetic Wave? Anyway, they were hiding out in the Dominican Republic, and then earlier this week they got into a gun battle with the local federales, and now their gooses are collectively cooked. Hopefully the jail cell will deflect the galactic wave? (K)
10. The Human Expression - Love At Psychedelic Velocity
More like Sex at Psychedelic Velocity. These punks will kidnap your daughter, dose her, ravage her teenage body and leave her dazed and confused out on the boulevard for the Manson family to pick her up. "Cause you're sick and it's wrong and baby it won't be long till they're reading your will" What's with garage rock? Every song is about how their girlfriend burned them, but also they are on acid, and speed. So it's blind fucked up sexually frustrated stoner rage. You already love these Eddie Haskell creeps, from Nuggets, ya know, "Optical Sound", the ultimate hangover tune. They turned down a chance to record "Born to be Wild" and faded. (S)
09. The Water Witch
Gloomy Brits laying down unsettling doomscapes of forest-dwelling black-prog. I'm super into it. Makes me wanna hunt monsters with a bow and arrow. (K)
08. The Frost - Rock 'n Roll Music
Pull tab beer cans, cheap hot dogs on the grill, bad acid, girls doing the loco motion on the hood of a 1964 Chrysler but it's 1970. Sub-Grand Funk nonsense from Michigan. It's good for the afternoon BBQ but not much else. (S)
7. Beware Mr. Baker
Upcoming documentary on Cream's flame-bearded madman drummer. Where's he been all these years? What's he up to? From the looks of things, he's mostly up to beating up documentary filmmakers. This doc looks awesome and terrifying in equal doses. Can't wait! (K)
06. Mainliner - Imaginative Plan
Buzzsaw guitar. You ever hear that before? Roy Orbison looking Jap-rock motherfuckers wielding chainsaws, I mean buzz saws. What is a buzz saw anyway? Mainliner was the offshoot of High Rise who really wanted to call themselves Psychedelic Speed Freaks, although most likely they were a straight edge band, because it's really a drag to do drugs in Japan from what I hear. They lock you up and throw away the key. Buzz rhymes with fuzz and fuzz is a primary color, so if you take a red crayola and draw a line through time from Blue Cheer in San Francisco you end up in Tokyo with Mainliner. (S)
5. Ride Into the Sun
I can't actually figure out how to buy this killer new 7” single from sun-baked Australian psychers, but you can definitely download it for free on Bandcamp, and I heartily recommend you do so. Groovy and laidback, but with a Jesus and Mary Chain-esque bite and a cinematic atmosphere. Sweet. (K)
04. Zakary Thaks - From The Habit
Child molestation "Can you Hear your Daddy's footsteps", the meaning of life itself "Mirror Of Yesterday", and "Green Crystal Ties", well I'm guessing that's about drugs. right? All from Corpus Christi texas, a righteous place to be a hippie. (S)
03. Hexvessel
Like Water Witch, Hexvessel previously toiled in black metal, and the deep, dark woods vibe is still there, but this is actually really groovy dark-folk with jazzy horns and almost chant-y vocals. Elegantly spooky stuff. (K)
02. George Harrison: Living In the Material World
I don't care what Ken says, the Beatles are fuckin' cool (actually we have never talked about the Fab Four, ever, maybe he's their number one fan). Although they were the biggest band in the land they certainly shaped the axis for which the Advanced Demonological world revolves. The film is more of a tribute to everything good about the most psychedelic Beatle. Nothing bad. But that's OK. That's just what my man deserves. (S)
1. The Dolly Parton Pinball Machine
Way cooler than the Nuge game because boobs. (K)

Top 13 (of the Week)
Sure, you know what's cool. But do you know what's really fuckin' FAR OUT? That's where Advanced Demonology comes in. Every week, (K)en and (S)wilson trudge through the murky waters of the pop culture hellscape, dredging up sparkly morsels of wonder. These are the result of our latest foray into the world of the weird, our wildest, wiggest-out picks of the week. Call it our 13 Point Program.
13. Robots in Disguise
Sometimes it takes me awhile to catch up to things. Robots in Disguise is a British two-girl electro shocktroop, and their music is great. Snotty, punky, weird, danceable. Apparently they were on The Mighty Boosh a few times. That show gives me a headache. So does this band, really, but I like 'em. (K)
12. Hashpapi
presumably, This band was too stoned to even spell the name of the single correctly. This is the kind of righteous freak-out you'd expect from a group called Hashpapi. It's mixed in such a way that I thought there was something wrong with the stereo. This band might be from Chile, but they sound like some slime that has bubbled up from the early 70's London Underground. I highly doubt there is more to come from these guys so enjoy the moment. (S)
11. Supertzar - Funeral Blues EP
Been getting into lots of lumbering doom-rock this week. Dunno why. Probably the summer's fucking me up. Anyway, these Helsinki mopes do an outstanding job on this gritty, grimy, riff-tyrant of an EP. Download it for free on Bandcamp and then spend the rest of the month in the basement staring at cracks in the wall. (K)
10. Boyjazz - Unlimited Nights & Weekends (2012)
Big riffs, Halford level vocals, swagger, good song writing, the only thing missing from this equation is a proper audience, a parking lot full of maniacs getting fucked up living for the party. Supposedly these guys have been around for a while and they toured with so and so and they used to be involved with who's it's what's it, but I can't tell what is real and what is fake anymore. All I know is that this fuckin' record rocks! (S)
9. From Beyond - One Year
Houston's space-doom freaks create a fairly breathtaking ode to The Singularity, AKA THE DAY THE MACHINES GAIN CONSCIOUSNESS (ETA 2035). Some folks think this event will usher in a brave new world with limitless possibilities. Others, like From Beyond, assume we'll immediately be enslaved by our robot overlords. Guess we'll just have to wait and find out which way it goes. For now, spend the next nine minutes rocking out to this thunderous track and prepare for the worst. (K)
8. Wigwam - Tombstone Valentine (1970)
A lost gem from Finland, produced by the king at the controls Kim Fowley. Great weirdo songwriting worthy of the tape loop in the trip out room. Lot's of guitars that sound like they are being sizzled in a frying pan or being played by many elves at once, not certain which. Equally strange is a track by experimentalist Erkki Kurenniemi, "The Dance of the Anthropoids", dropped onto the record by Fowley for no explicable reason. (S)
7. Venera 13
The Curiosity rover is zipping around on the surface of Mars as we speak, which is good news, because let's face it, some of us are gonna end up living there. But did you know that in 1982 – not a particularly tech-savvy year – the Russians landed a probe, with the awesomely stoner-rocking name of Venera 13, on Venus? Venus has an unbelievably harsh environment – temps hover at 900 f, and the sky is filled with acid – so anything that lands there will be destroyed within an hour. The Venera 3 lasted 57 minutes and was able to relay a few pics back to Earth before Venus claimed it. For a planet named after the goddess of love, Venus is mean as hell. (K)
6. Dark Carnival on youtube
In the 90's the bane of my existence (among a million other things) was always missing Dark Carnival live. I spent most of that confusing decade in the blue collar slums of Philadelphia where this band pretty much embodied what you thought cool was. Snotty obnoxious vocals belted out by an art damaged sexpot death goddess named Niagara (Destroy All Monsters) against a back drop of blistering Detroit rock 'n roll, by ex-members of the Stooges and sometimes the Dead Boys. Well, thanks to Interweb Inc. you and I can peek through a key hole back into time. By the way, youtube is Ron Asheton heaven. He's one of my musical heroes and I got to see him play once, thank god. But's it's just not enough, goddamit. Doesn't he look fuckin' sharp in this clip? And as for Niagara, she is pretty much what every girl around me at the time wished she could be. I don't know what's up with the other chick in the video. Do you?(S)
5. Mitch Hedberg mini-doc
Who didn't love Mitch Hedberg? He had Monster Magnet jokes! Mitch clocked out early a few years back due to a bad ticker, but the laffs live on. Scott Moran, who's working on a series of comedian mini-docs, posted this great video snapshot of Mitch, via his comedian wife Lynn Shawcroft, earlier this week. Good stuff. I miss him, he died. (K)
4. Easy Action - Friends Of Rock 'n Roll (2005)
I've been busy as hell this week having to do a bunch of stuff around the Mind Warp Pavilion to get ready for my trip back to the fatherland (New Jersey). I haven't had much time to explore new shit and I've mostly had the itunes on shuffle. Easy Action came on and I thought maybe you AD fans might not be hip to these guys. Jim Brannon, who fronted one of the only truly great hardcore bands (Negative Approach) and the magnificent Laughing Hyenas leads this band of Detroit vets (there is allot of Detroit around the Mind warp) in a group that I assume is named after the fantastic Alice Cooper record. Jim's voice is hard to take for a the duration because it's so fuckin' intense, that's a good thing, but just hard to take for a whole record, i'm getting old, but he's older than me and able to bring it as heavy and real as this. Fuck!!!! (S)
3. It's the Collinson Sisters' birthday!
Greatest evil twin team in history. First twins in Playboy. From Malta, which...who knew that was a real place? Everything about them is awesome. I think they both married princes. They're probably on horses as we speak. Watch their finest hour, Twins of Evil, as soon as possible. It's amazing. (K)
2. The Street Sliders
In honor me NOT being able to go to Japan this week and instead going to the New York/New Jersey area, here is a bunch of Japs doing Tri-State junkie rock in the 80's and passing it off as pop. Kanpai! (S)
1. Last Shop Standing
New doc about indie record shops in the UK. I used to dream about going to London specifically to buy records at Shades, the record store that used to advertise in Kerrang! Back then, there were hundreds of record stores in the UK. Now there's only a handful, but they're keeping the dream alive. If you dig vinyl (and you do, I know you do), you'll wanna check this out! Top 13 Of The Week
13. Spiritualized - Hey Jane video
So, Spiritualized - the 90's psyche-drone-pop band that spun-off from the 80's psyche-drone-Stooges rip-off band Spacemen 3 is back with a spankin' new album called Sweet Heart, Sweet Light, and to celebrate, they've released a fucked-up, 10 minute-long mini-movie about a transsexual hooker who gets in a seriously brutal fight. I mean, that's not what it's about - I'm sure there's a deeper meaning to it all - but that's definitely what happens. (K)
12. Terror On The Beach
There were a few movies that used to come on television when I was a little kid that scared the living shit out of me. They would be burned in my memory like a bad dream. The rest of my life I would be wondering "what the hell was that movie I saw when a was a kid, with that…..". Bang! the internet is invented and my problem is solved. (S)
11. Kim Jung Mi: Now
A Korean Psychedelic masterpiece produced by the great fuzz guitar player Shin Jung Hyun. If you like moody female 60's euro-pop like Jane Birkin you'll love this. (S)
10. Kadavar
A trio of German weird-beards who lay down a seriously smokin' set of proto-metal slabbage on their self-titled debut (Tee Pee Records). These dudes have the whole package: songs about mountains, riffs copped from Sir Lord Baltimore, mental-patient mutton chops, etc etc. Also the dudes in the band are named the following: Wolf, Mammoth, and Tiger. A stone groove. (K)
09. Robert Hazard and the Heroes
Ken and I were talking on a recent show about how at one point in time you could be big in one city and completely unknown in another. Robert Hazard is the best example of this. He sold 300,000 records in his home town of Philadelphia. That's huge! There is only 5 million people in Philly. I think he wrote a big hit for Cindi Lauper called : Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and than faded. (S)
08. Snow Cola
there's been a lot of studies popping up lately suggesting that the chemicals in the food coloring they use in traditional colas will, eventually, cause you to stroke out. Now, I'm the kind of fella that enjoys the occasional soda, but does not care for strokes or cardiac events. So, good news: Snow is all natural, and the coloring is made from fruits and vegetables. How's it taste? Well, I've only had the diet version, and it tastes like...well, like diet cola. Disgusting, but oddly satisfying. I bet the non-diet cola is super-tasty, though. And no strokes. Hooray for bubbly brown liquids! (S)
07. Mean Jeans
I was worried that the kids didn't want to party no more. I was worried that they was staying home on the inter web too much. I was worried that things were getting a little too "smart". I was worried that they only wanted to listen to emotional mermaids singing underwater in an electrified swimming pool(!?). I was worried worried worried. Mean Jeans put's my mind at ease. Just some good ole American instant gratification. (S)
06. Roger Corman Cult Classics: The Nurses Collection
Finally the Roger Corman Cult Classic series get to the nurse movies! Romance! Action! Violence! Friendship! TOPLESS NURSES! (K)
05. Kenneth Patchen
Poetry is dead so it's high time we enjoy some dead poets. You like popular music right? Well poetry doesn't have much to do with popular music, despite what they say, Rock 'n Roll is Not poetry set to music, sorry (I don't have time to get into why right now). The only thing that music has in common with poetry is that popular music replaced poetry. Because this short form of written communicate was in high demand for at least 1,000 years. Now it's not. Kenneth Patchen was a pacifist and a radical and was pretty upset by the way human begins mistreated each other and he wrote beautifully about it. You should spend at least twenty minutes with him if not more. (S)
04. Bebel Gilberto
she's not Astrud's daughter, but she sounds like her. Sweet, breezy samba for lazy spring days. Lovely in every way. (K)
03. SRC: Self titled
I've owned this record since 1993. I never really got into till yesterday. I read an article in the SHINDIG! Annual No.1 about them and it really brought me into the whole trip. They are from Detroit and while the rest of there compatriots were proto-punking and Mitch Rydering there way through flower power, these guys were piper at the gates of dawning. I get it now! Like ALL of the great Detroit 60's bands they made all the wrong career moves and ended up in the dust bin. Bummer. But good news! it's 2012 and it's as relevant as anything else out there. (S)
02. Gorehound's Guide to Splatter Films of the 60's and 70's
This seminal tome from Scott Aaron Stine has been out of print since the mid 90's and now goes for astronomical prices, but I just discovered that it's available on the Kindle for a low (well, in comparison) $14.99. If you have a taste for proto-splatter from the sick sick 70's (and the far-our 60's), then you'll love this book. Nice overview of the genre and dozens of reviews of twisted visions like Carnival of Blood, Criminally Insane, the Flesh and Blood Show, Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things, etc. Well-written and with enough suggestions to keep your Netflix queue stuffed for months. (K)
01. Catching Playmate / attempted murderess Victoria Vetri on Star Trek……(S)
